Beautiful rose mahogany burl slab, timber sourced from south-east Queensland. I found this piece of timber in the workshop of a woodworker friend who had kept a large slab of burl for many years waiting for the right project to come along. My friend cut several pieces for me from the slab and the woodgrain was spectacular once it was sanded and had some oil applied. It is a rich brown with gold highlights at the top of the board, with a little gold resin infill where needed.
Burl is that knobby bit you sometimes see growing on the side of a tree. The good thing about burl is that it can be removed without harming the tree, so it is a sustainable source of wood. Burl is usually more expensive because of its beauty and scarcity (burl only grows when trees form these exterior growths, so it is harder to find).
