Classic design timber hall table (or is it a pot stand?), customised with a mineral photograph from Series 1 of Sue Hanson's Australian Mineral Series.
The photo (Photo 8 of 12) is a magnified view of garnet crystals set in pyroxene and quartz. Actual rock section photographed is 3mm width.
The table is 76cm high, and the diameter of the top surface is 29cm, the lower disk has a diameter of 18cm. The table has been finished with high gloss varnish which retains brush strokes for a unique look.
Sue was a geologist when she created these beautiful images (12 in Series 1) and wanted to find a wider audience for her artwork. Sue tragically passed away suddenly in 2007, leaving me (Sue's sister) with the purpose of doing what Sue didn't get a chance to do. Apart from more traditional artwork on paper and canvas, I have been creating some different ways of presenting the images.
I found this table / stand at an antique market in Toowoomba, and bought it with the idea that Sue's Photo 8 of Series 1 (Garnet) would look great on it, as unlike all the other photos in the series, it is very muted in colour but has quite a beautiful 'pattern'. It needed quite a lot of sanding to remove previous coats of stain to allow the wood to accept the image, and took me a long time to finish as it is the first time I have attempted a larger scale item.
