I've been interested in mandalas for many years, after seeing tibetan monks make a sand mandala in Brisbane. My interest was re-kindled following a recent mandala class and I wanted to try painting on a timber slice. This piece of ironbark was primed with a royal blue enamel, then two layers of resin to seal the acrylic paint used for the mandala artwork. Designed as a decorative piece for your kitchen or dining table, this piece of ironbark was cut for me by a local woodturner from a metre long log ( it was very heavy!)
This is the first tree ring mandala I've done, and I plan on making many more, they do take a little time though, several weeks for each one. The timber is sealed with two layers of clear resin for long lasting gloss and clarity, resin is inert once cured and the resin I use is food-safe. The sides will have mineral oil applied to condition the timber, and I'll paint the underside and attach some felt feet so the piece wont scratch your surface. I include a card with some tips on caring for your piece, the main thing is not to use any abrasives on the surface or cut on it, or submerse it in water.
