Olivewood serving board with inlaid dried rose buds. The olivewood in this piece is from South Australia.
The timber is estimated to be 150 + years old. 'Young' olive wood can be quite plain, and it takes many years for the timber to acquire this spectacular grain. I feel very privileged to work with this special piece, when you consider the tree was probably planted around the time of Burke and Wills' expedition and the Ballarat gold rush. It was found and saved by a lovely woodworker in S.A. who has been dedicated to saving beautiful old trees and timber before developers clear the land.
I have inlaid dried pink rose buds, dried white jasmine flowers and pressed daisies into the resin layer.
To finish the board, I have attached an antique copper handle made in Italy.
The dimensions of this board are 20cmW x 32cmL (incl handle) x 2.3cmH. The resin river is 2.5cmW.
